Way of Baroda organized a symposium on
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
to get people from the corporate sector
and contribute to a better society. Prominent
people from industry attended it. The
Chairman, Mr. Atul H. Patel and Vice-Chairman,
Mr. Amit Goradia of United Way of Baroda
warmly welcomed everyone. |

Mr.
Venkatesh Valluri, Chairman and President
of Ingersoll Rand India Ltd, a globally
diversified Industrial technology company
explained about how the society and societal
behaviour keeps changing with time. He
emphasized on the moral responsibility
of corporate sector to tackle issues like
Environment, Energy crunch, Security which
fails to get the required attention from
the central governing body. Further, he
explained that a business is always influenced
by external factors- at present, it is
the employees and in future it’ll
be the NGOs, consumers and communities.
He concluded that to have a sustainable
business, they must be kept in mind and
be served in form of CSR. |

| Mr.
Shailesh Gandhi, Information Commissioner,
Government of India under the Right to Information
Act, expressed his views on public and private
sectors partnership in CSR and elaborated
on corporate responsibility towards society.
He encouraged the participants to utilize
the Right to Information. He emphasized
that when people are ethical it serves the
purpose of social responsibility in a direct
or an indirect manner. |

| Ms.
Anu Aga, Director of Thermax India Ltd,
focused on and brought to fore some major
issues India faces today- malnutrition,
education, gender discrimination and Human
Development Index (HDI) ranking. She strongly
believed that corporate could help by performing
the function of ‘watchdogs’-
If the corporate sector got together, they
can demand accountability from the government
and overcome mismanagement and corruption
related to funds. |

In
the symposium, the scope and limits of responsibility
of companies in Vadodara were discussed.
It emphasized that the participants contribute
towards society’s welfare and improvement.
By doing CSR, companies will play their
part in developing talent, promoting human
rights, social inclusion and cohesion, etc.
and hence would also be investing in their
own future. The symposium helped clarify
how companies, governments and NGOs can
direct efforts for a better society. It
was concluded that CSR is no longer an option
but a necessity. |
